Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale Returns to Palma Ceia United Methodist Church

The community is invited once again, to experience the classical and gospel music presented by the Bethune-Cookman Concert Chorale. This multi-talented group of students will be present in full concert at Palma Ceia United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 19th during the 10:30 a.m. service, but will also participate in all three services that morning.

Bethune-Cookman University is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and was founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. She began the (then) Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for African American Girls with $1.50, five little girls and faith in God. Since 1904, the University has graduated more than 13,200 students. Today, the Chorale has over 100 members, an instrumental ensemble, traditional strings, guitarists, and liturgical dancers. The Chorale represents Bethune-Cookman University, performing around the globe and all over the United States.

The Chorale is led by interim Director Tawn B. Thomas. Mr. Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education at Bethune-Cookman University. He received his Masters of Music Education degree from Florida State University, where he studied choral conducting under the direction of Rodney Eichenberger. Mr. Thomas is recognized and honored for his contributions as an educator in the 2004-2005, Ninth Edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and was nominated to appear in the 2006-2007 addition, He currently serves as choir director at the First United Methodist Church in Bunnel, Florida.

The concert on February 19th, 2012 will mark the eighth year that the Chorale has performed at Palma Ceia United Methodist Church. Senior Pastor, Dr. Kevin M. James, Sr. is a Bethune-Cookman University Alumnus and Chairs the Nomination and Governance Committee on the Board of Trustees. He was the Universities Chaplain from 1994 to 1998 while serving his home church as pastor of Stewart Memorial United Methodist in Daytona Beach, Florida. Dr. James said, “The renowned and nationally known Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale will lead us in the joyful gifts of praises and songs to our God. This concert will uplift your soul and rekindle joy in your heart. And as Psalm 100 says, ‘Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!’ Come and bring a friend. ”
